Lewis Talbert Jr. was born to Lewis Talbert and Missouri Anne Talbert on February 5 1927, although his birth certificate filled in by Dr William Officer was dated February 4, he insisted his mother, I called her Granny, said it was February 5 so that’s that. He was eighth of ten kids and an incredibly intelligent man. He graduated in 1944, was Valedictorian of his class but didn’t accept it as he did not want to make a speech. If you knew him, you know that’s true. His oldest brother, Homer who was born in 1909 used to say Junior (Lewis hated that name) was ten years old before Homer knew he COULD talk. He served in the Army and served in Japan but thankfully arrived as Japan surrendered. He came home and helped at family farm in Pitkin, Louisiana but moved to Bay City, Texas as times were hard. There he met, as he described, the most beautiful girl he ever saw, Ruth Norris, working at Hartz drive in. They married on their lunch breaks on October 17, 1949 and stayed in Bay City until they returned to Pitkin to be near family and started a family. In 1956 they moved to Port Arthur Texas where Lewis worked for the Kansas City Southern where he worked until he retired in 1986. Lewis was one of the finest people and when he died in 1992, many people showed up at his service and told stories of how Lewis Jr had helped them, even as he had little he always gave all to those in need. Everything he gave took all he had except the love of those whose lives he touched. He did indeed have a wonderful life.
