I thought of my old L.A. neighbor Lois yesterday while watching the Winter Olympics. She adored watching the figure skaters and their choreographed routines. We lived in the same building off Franklin and Vermont for six or seven years, until I moved to France. Her front door was usually open so when I'd come into the building, she'd sometimes invite me for a coffee or a glass of white wine. I knew that her father was in the novelty supply business in Minneapolis (my home town), and I think she might have spent part of her childhood there. She was a gifted singer and soloist for the local churches and one of the first cooks to give dinner parties with recipes from the Silver Palate. The loss of many of her beautiful Waterford Crystal pieces in the mid-eighties L.A. earthquake was a tragedy to her. What an unflagging anglophile she was! I am saddened to hear of her passing, especially so many years after. If I ever pass by Palmerston Place in my future travels, I shall look nostalgically for her little yellow "Bug" parked out in front.
