Louisa Shaw was born in Sydney NSWon 24thJune 1842. She was baptised on the 2nd of October in the parish of Kororiaki and her baptismal record states her parents were Isaac and Louisa Shaw- Profession Constable, her father ex chief Constable of Norfolk Island arrived on the Victoria a New vessel purpose built to support the British Government in the new Colony NZ . On board was the rather secret voyage was 4 Passengers Lieutenant Governor to NZ William Hobson, and 2 Land Commissioners and ex Chief Constable Isaac Shaw left behind His defacto wife Mary Shaw nee Tinker (BUSBY) wife of convict William Busby and her 8 year-old Son. Benjamin. He was given the the position by the NSW governor Sir George Gipps for 6 months to arrest absconding convicts and return them to Norfolk island, a prison Island. Norfolk Island was a prison for committing 2nd offenders and serious crimes which is situated .1000 KLM east of Sydney .He arrived in Whangaroa Bay of Islands in late November 1840. He was employed by the NSW Mounted Police and he was previously a convict arising in 1830 to the position of Chief constable of Norfolk Island In 1832. Isaac Shaw returned to Sydney after resigning his position after his life was threatened by the repeat offending convicts who preferred death to life in such a horrible place. Isaac Shaw had a defacto wife Mrs Busby and her son Benjamin Busby ,she was the wife of William Busby Serving 21 years in NSW for Burglary he receiving his conditional pardon 1845. From in the short period of time he spent at the Bay of Islands December 1840 to 1843 had a second wife Louisa--- ? who I believe was a New Zealander but efforts to prove this was futile. Louisa ---? was about 18 when daughter Louisa was born, and Isaac with his new wife, returned to Sydney in 1843 as the NSW government withdrew their control and relinquished their responsibilities to the newly formed NZ Police. He registered his new daughter reason unkown NSW 117/1842 V 18422 117 54 as Father :Isaac Shaw- Mother: Louisa at the Wesleyan Mission Sydney . In 1845 Isaac Shaw and wife and child departed Sydney to Port Nicholson N. Z. on the schooner " SCOTTIA". In 1846 Isaac Shaw was invited and appointed by NZ Police Magistrate of Akaroa C. Robinson to the position of Chief Constable of Akaroa in the South Island. An Advertisement in the-- NEW ZEALAND SPECTATOR AND STRAIT GUARDIAN --10th March 1847 P.2 LOUISA SHAW 24 years AKAROA.-- DEATH: on 5th of February, in childbed, after an illness of 35 hours ,in the 24th year of her age, Louisa ,wife of Isaac Shaw, Chief Constable at Akaroa. She was a most exemplary wife ,a kind mother, and a very charitable neighbour. Her loss will be severely felt, particularly by the rising generation, as she established and continued the first and only School for Europeans in that settlement.: Louisa Shaw was buried in the old Akaroa French Quarter of the cemetery ,the only cemetery at the time. Akaroa was formed as a settlement just after the treaty of Waitangi was signed and 60 families from France and a few from Germany had sailed to Akaroa with the intent of forming a French Settlement but on arrival the British flag was flying but they decided to stay regardless. There is no doubt that Louisa's mother would have been a great help with the European settlers as she would have been able to speak the Maori plus the English languages.. Two years later I was able to obtain3 Documents from " Archway NZ Archives. One of these documents ( now on View on their site). The main basis was that the magistrate complained to authorities; SUBJECT RELATIVE TO THE MEMORIAL And Conduct of Isaac Shaw : The magistrate had withdrawn his situation. There were major problems with Alcohol involved and the Magistrate was castigated for not collecting Duty on spirits to the surrounding districts by his superiors in Wellington. I noted that he was replaced just after Isaac and his daughter returned to Sydney ,she being now 7 years old. This same year Mary Shaw his defacto, first wife, died in Sydney the coroner said cause of Death was " Visitation of God" What happened to Louisa Shaw I don't know. Maybe she went to an Child orphanage. In 1853 Isaac Shaw was working for the Sydney Road trust In 1855 on 4th January Isaac Shaw was was buried@ Saint Stephens the Martyr Penrith NSW in an unmarked grave . There was no mention of any Family Members on his death Details. At 13 years of age Louisa was now an orphan. Orphanages not only took in orphans but also children without parental support.
