She graduated from Simms High School in 1943. She taught Sunday School for many years while her children were young. She became a board-certified Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1968 and received continuing education from Purdue University in 1984. She worked at the Teton Medical Center for 32 years, the last 14 years as a surgical scrub nurse and supervisor of the central sterile department.
She was married to John Law-rence Groot on June 10, 1945, in Choteau and together they raised five daughters. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Margaret traveled to Zimbabwe, Africa, in 1987, visiting at a mission farm. She wrote and published a book about her African experience in 1988 and retired from nursing in 1990. She then became an assistant librarian at the Choteau Public Library in 1990.
