Martin Horelka was born on Augsut 20, 1885 in Lubrov, Czechoslovakia to parents Martin Horelka (1834-) and Anna Simicek (1855-1917). He had sisters Annie Horelka (1863-1926) and Rosina Horelka (1873-1922).
He and his family immigrated to the United States and arrived in Galveston, Texas, USA on August 25, 1890. He then resided in Lavaca, Texas, USA.
On June 7, 1904 Martin married Anna Mucala (1886–1956) and they had children Francis (1905-1986), Joe (1907-1935), Frank August (1909-1942), Hermina (1913-), Emil (1914-), Mary (1916-), Aline (1918-), Martin (1919-1969), Victor (1921-), Albert (1923-), George (1925-), and Louis Horelka (1930-).
Martin worked as a cotton farmer in Inez, Victoria, Texas.

Martin Horelka Jr was born on April 14, 1919 in Inez, Texas, USA to parents Martin Horelka (1885-1962) and Anna Mucala (1886-1956). He grew up in a large family with siblings Francis, Joe, Frank, Hermina, Emil, Mary, Aline, Victor, Albert, George, and Luis Horelka.
In 1940, at the age of 21, he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Inez, Victoria, Texas. At the time of the draft registration, Martin listed himself as his own employer.
Martin then enlisted in the United States Army on November 22, 1945, at Ft Sam Houston, Texas. He joined the Quartermaster Corps, which was responsible for providing supplies, services, and support to the military. With the rank of Private First Class, Martin became part of the Regular Army, encompassing officers, nurses, warrant officers, and enlisted men serving on active duty.
