My Grandfather Matthew McAlerney immigrated to the Unites States through Canada in 1911 when he was 22 years old. He came to the Pacific Northwest, Seattle & worked on the railroad. In October 1916, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Kempson, who immigrated (escaped) from Ireland in late April 1916, after participating in the 1916 Uprising in Dublin Ireland. England had put a “price on her head”. My Grandparents were married in Seattle Washington at St. Joseph Catholic Church in February, 1917. Their first born, Alice Georgina was born on December 25, 1917. They subsequently had 6 more children, Kathleen, Matthew, Jr., James, Elizabeth, Margaret & John. My Grandfather died on May 9, 1981. My Grandmather, Elizabeth “Lily” Ann Kempson McAlerney was born 01/17/1897 in Dublin Ireland & died in Seattle, Washington on February 22, 1996. My Grandparents became U.S. citizens, shortly after they each arrived in the United States, while they always loved Ireland & both believed in a “UNITED IRELAND”, they considered themselves “Americans, citizens of the greatest country on this earth. They believed in what the U.S. stands for…independence of equality. Besides passing on our Catholic Faith, they always encouraged us to “vote…it is your right & it is your duty”. I treasure the faith, compassion, work ethic & example they “left” us. They were married for 64 years!

Matthew J Mcalerney of Seattle, King County, WA was born on February 18, 1924, and died at age 82 years old on November 22, 2006.
