Michael Burdi was born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents Andrew John Burdi and Katherine Ann Miller. He had an older sister named Margaret Burdi and a younger brother named Raymond Burdi. As a young adult, he lived in Dayton, Newaygo, Michigan, USA, and worked in the canning industry.
On September 28, 1946, Michael enlisted in the United States Army in Dearborn, Michigan, and entered the Regular Army as a Private. His enlistment was for the Panama Canal Department, which was responsible for maintaining the security and operation of the Panama Canal. The canal was of great strategic importance to the United States at that time, and the Army had a significant presence in the area.
On May 29, 1950, Michael married Katherine "Kay" Ann Herbert at Christ the King Church in Oceana, Michigan, USA.
Michael Mario Burdi is the son of Frank and Anna Burdi. He was the first born and had younger siblings Angelo, Rose, and Daniel Burdi. They lived in Richmond, New York.

After his military service, Michael settled in Belleville, New Jersey, USA, where he lived with his wife Mary S Burdi (1927-2007), and they had one son together.
