Milton D. Stiles Aug 17, 1956 - Oct 5, 1987 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Milton was one of my roommates when I lived in Morgantown, WV in the early/mid 1980s. He worked for a bank in Morgantown. He was a sweet, nerdy kind of a guy who liked to smoke his Meerscham pipe ad wear ascots/scarves around his neck. He contracted HIV/AIDS and moved to Pittsburgh. Shortly before his death, another friend (Sandy) and I travelled up from WV to Pittsburgh to visit him, having heard that he was very sick and not expected to live much longer. He was bedridden in the home he shared with his partner and I will never forget my shock at seeing how the disease had taken a toll on his body - he looked like the pictures I'd seen of Auschwitz prisoners. Nevertheless, when I walked into the room his face lit up, he smiled and struggled to sit up in bed. We had a short visit that tired him out, I kissed him on his cheek & said goodbye. As we left, his partner Alan thanked me for coming, saying, "He hasn't been able to sit up in bed for days, but when he saw you...." Milton died soon after. I know services were held by his friend in Pittsburgh, but Sandy & I attended the small service his family held in Morgantown. We weren't really welcome, as his family had basically disowned him when he'd come out as gay, but we felt it was important for us to attend. Rest in peace Milton, my friend, and rise in glory.
