At the District Court yesterday, before Mr. Panton, P.M., and a bench of magistrates, Minnie Goodrich was charged with selling spirits without a licence. Archibald Andrews, inspector of excise, stated that on the 3rd instant, in company with Inspectors Watson and Reidy, he visited a shop in Bourke-street east, occupied by Mr. Ohlenrott's, the holder of a colonial wine licence He went into a refreshment room off the shop, and cailed for some brandy, which was served to himself and friends by the defendant, who was a servant in Mr. Ohlenrott's employ. Mr. Fisher, who appeared on behalf of defendant, pointed out that a great hardship would be indicted on the defendant if she were fined. She was only a domestic servant, had no means at her disposal, and would have to go to gaol. He characterised the conduct of the inspectors as disgraceful in endeavouring to entrap the defendant into making a sale during the absence of the master from the shop. Mr. Panton said that the bench were sorry to convict, but the case had been clearly proved, and they could only follow the rule laid down by the act. The defendant would be lined £25, in default distress, and in default of distress three months imprisonment. The bench would also order that all liquor found in Mr. Ohlenrott's premises should he confiscated.
