Peter Campos Salinero
Pete’s father was Francisco Hernandez Salinero and his mother was Anna Maria Campos Salinero. All were from Macotera, Spain. Pete had three younger brothers. His brother Chris was born in 1908, his brother Joe was born in 1914, both in Macotera. His youngest brother Paul was born in 1924 in Hayward California. He also had a sister born in Hayward who died sometime in her youth. The family immigrated to the United States in 1920. The ship sailed from Barcelona stopping in Puerto Rico momentarily and then to New Orleans where the family disembarked. From there they took a train which brought them to Hayward, California where they settled and eventually purchased a home at 663 Watkins Street, later moving to a larger home up the street. They arrived under sponsorship of Francisco’s brother-in-law (brother of his wife Anna Maria), Pedro Campos who had immigrated years before. Pete became a U.S. citizen in January, 1937 and didn’t miss voting in any election until his death. He was a member and an officer of the local Spanish Club and participated for a time in local celebrations by dancing in Las Danzas where he wore traditional clothing. For a time he was an avid fan of soft ball and played in local games. 0n November 1, 1936 he married Connie Hernandez, daughter of immigrant parents from Macotera, Spain at San Carlos Catholic Church in Monterey. Together they had 3 children: Frank (b. 1938), Joyce (b. 1942, d. 1943) and Judy (b. 1945). In 1969 he was able to return to visit Spain with his wife, sister-in-law Mary, his niece, Pam Jacobsen and his son and daughter in law. He returned to his birth town of Macotera. In 1986 he again visited Spain with his daughter and son-in-law to participate in the celebration of Macotera’s patron Saint San Roque. A third trip followed with his youngest brother Paul. Pete, my dad, loved his wife and children and worked hard to provide them with the best life he could provide them with. He lived long enough to see his grandchildren, Stephen and Carolyn both marry and to see his first great grandchild, Kyle.
