I knew Richard W. Janke in his older years while I was a teenager in the 80's. I can attest to this. Through the years I had the honor of knowing him, he was one of the kindest, educated, caring, empathetic, and honorable people I have ever met. He was a proud German and I know that he was involved with the Steuben society here in NYC. He loved the newspaper and told me about his days in the military. He helped as a teachers assistant in PS 91 in the 1980's. I had a rough time as a kid and he adopted me as his apprentice. We would sit in the Laundromat while I washed my clothes or go to a restaurant and we would talk for hours. He shared with me his love of classical music and the arts as well as his respect for German food. From what I remember he told me he was in Love once when he was much younger. I do not know the specifics. I realize I am unable to give you much of the factual milestones of his life. All I can do it to tell you this. If you are lucky enough to come across this profile please know that Mr. Janke was a true Gentleman that cared about his community deeply and was in love with knowledge. I don't know why, maybe something happened to him over his life but I got a sense from him that giving back to the world was more then just a whim. He had a purpose in doing so, I'm not sure if he was repaying a debt of kindness that was shown to him as a youth. What I can say is this. I am now an adult and father myself, I am paying a debt back to him every day I live, one that I am proud to pay. In anyway I can help shape someones life with knowledge I try to do so. This is directly in response the effort that he put into me to be a cultured, aware and appreciative young man. In short Richard W. Janke until the day I die will always be considered a hero. When he passed away I met his family, nephews and nieces, We had dinner at Neidersteins, I could see in their actions they all Loved and respected him. He was a good man. ~Erik LaMarca
