Richard was born in Michigan. His father died the day he was born. He lived in Michigan until around 1938. He was married to Laura Austin, also of Michigan. He had 5 children (3 girls first, then 2 boys). He moved to Donelson, Tennessee and worked in an airplane factory. Then he moved to Winchester, Tennessee in 1954, and went to work as a civilian at Arnold Air Force Base near Tullahoma, Tennessee.
