A veteran of World War II, Richard enlisted in the United States Army on June 18, 1943 and was discharged on April 15, 1946. After World War II, Richard lived with his mother Luella Whitsett and stepfather Henry Martin, in Struthers Ohio. Also in the household were his younger siblings, Willie, Lillie Mae, and Lucy Whitsett. Richard Whitsett married Marjory R. Billow (1922 - 2002) and they had one son. When he died, he was married to Bernice Whitsett and he had one child, Revenda Bennerman.
