He first enlisted on November 16, 1936 and served until October 4, 1945. He then re-enlisted on August 22, 1946 and served until July 31, 1962. Overall, he served more than 25 years in the United States Army. On September 2, 1950 he married Agnes Idell Osier (1919–1986) in Reno, Washoe, Nevada, USA. They couple had two children together.
