William Fairhall was born on September 15, 1828 in Sussex, England to parents Thomas Fairhill (1784-1829) and Sarah Hills (1788-1860). He grew up in Upper Beeding, Sussex, England with his siblings Elizabeth, Thomas, James, Richard, Sophia, Sarah, Mary, and Frances Fairhall. On September 21, 1849 he left Plymouth, Devon, England aboard the "Harpley" Ship with his family. They arrived in Melbourne, Australia on January 6, 1850. William married Susannah Trotman (1828-1905) on August 19, 1851 in Melbourne, Bourke, Victoria, Australia. They had multiple children together including Mary Grace, Ruth, William Jr, Rose, Francis, Roland, Kate, Leonard, Susannah Rose, Alfred Ernest, Florence, Thomas, and John Albert Francis Fairhall. In 1900, he was living in Grey, West Coast, New Zealand and passed away there in 1904.
