Stratford, Strettle and Co., sold 500 wethers for Mr. William Murray, Broombank. The Weekly Examiner, Launceston. Sat. 26 Sept. 1876. THE LOSS OF THE S.S. DANDENONG. The Dandenong left Melbourne on the afternoon of Friday, 8th inst., bound for Sydney and Newcastle. Built in 1867, at Palmer's ironworks, Jarrow-on Tyne, England. She was an iron screw steamer of 743 tons. It was on its 207th trip when the disaster occured. In addition to her 28 crew, she had 27 saloon and 28 steerage passengers. At 1a.m., during a storm which was blowing with hurricane strength winds, just off Cape St. George, near Jervis Bay, her engines suddenly stopped. It was discovered that the shaft of the screw had snapped in two and somehow broken part of the hull, taking in water the crew manned the pumps and tried to plug the hole with mattresses and bedding. To try and lighten the ship, Captain Irwin gave orders to throw overboard some of the cargo from the main hold, but it was no use she was taking in water to rapidly, because of the rough sea they didn't attempt to lower a lifeboat until 2pm the next day when another ship was sighted, the bark Albert William, with a load of copper ore from Wallaroo S. A., bound for Newcastle, the lifeboats were lowered, and some of the passengers and crew climbed in, but not all made it to the other ship, either being swamped or smashed against the side of the ship. Three of his son's served in the Great War, Donald, Stanley and James McKenzie ( Kenny ), the eldest Don was awarded the Military Medal, but made the supreme sacrifice. The late Mr. Murray has a unique family history, dating back to the year 1669 to John Murray of Kobkirk, in the parish of Upper Rulewater, Roxburgh, who aquired a burial place in the kirkyard of Bedrule.
