  • Professional Career

    At age 20 on 8th December 1915, Abraham Smith went to Manchester to join the British effort in the First World War. He was enlisted to the Plymouth branch of the Royal Marine Light Infantry. After spending several months serving in Ireland, Smith and the rest of the unit were sent to join the British Expeditionary Force fighting on the Western Front in Northern France.

    As part of the 2nd Royal Marines Battalion, Abraham Smith was active around rural villages south of Arras in the Somme department (county) of France. Possibly on 18th February 1917 [unconfirmed], Abraham was wounded during combat with enemy forces. During the fighting, he’d taken bullets to his arm, leg and foot. He was taken 100 miles South West to Rouen, in Upper Normandy. There he was treated for gunshot wounds in the 11th Stationary Hospital, one of a group of makeshift medical facilities set up to deal with allied casualties of war. At 10:40pm on Tuesday 6th March 1917, Private Abraham Smith PLY/1275(S) of the 2nd Royal Marines Battalion died of his injuries. He was buried nearby at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France : Block O, plot VII. I. 4. He is listed on the wood panel memorial in his church, All Saint’s in Dudwell, Halifax and also in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.
