In 1805, on October 21st, Lord Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar in Spain. 33 British ships fought 41 ships from Spain and France. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost 22 ships while the British lost none. The battle ended plans to invade Great Britain.

In 1821, on May 5th, former Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, died in exile on Saint Helena - ruled by the British - perhaps of stomach cancer. Supposedly, his last words were "France, army, head of the army, Joséphine".

In 1856, on March 31st, The Treaty of Paris was signed by the Russian Empire and the allied forces of the Ottoman Empire, the British Empire, the French Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Treaty ended the Crimean War which had begun almost 3 years earlier.

In 1862, on February 22nd, Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as President of the Confederate States of America. His term was to be for 6 years.

In 1874, in the year of Ada Florence Mclaughlin's passing, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.
