Crash victim suspected in earlier hit-and-run
A Breda man killed in a head-on collision with a semitrailer truck is believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run accident shortly before the fatal crash, authorities said.
Adam J. Steinkamp, 21, died Wednesday night on U.S. Highway 30 just east of Carroll. Steinkamp was driving eastbound in the westbound lane of the highway when he collided with a semitrailer driven by Dennis Sheehan, 60, of Ankeny, according to the accident report.
Both vehicles caught fire and were engulfed in flames when rescuers arrived.
Sheehan suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from St. Anthony Regional Hospital. It is unknow if Steinkamp, who was driving a white Cadillac, was killed in the collision or the fire, Authorities said.
Shortly before the accident, someone reported that a white Cadillac was involved in a hit-and-run in Carroll. Authorities also received two other driving complaints about a white Cadillac. The crash remains under investigation.
