Agnes (Kenihan) Summerton of Yallourn, Latrobe City County, VIC Australia was born in 1886 to William Kenihan and Annie Blair Kenihan. She had siblings Katherine Kenihan Maxwell, Rubena Kenihan, John Claude Kenihan, Helen Margaret Kenihan, Elizabeth Kenihan, Alexander Kenihan, Elsie Kenihan, Gladys Anne Kenihan, William Wallace Kenihan, Lorna Kenihan, and Janet Kenihan. She married John Henry Summerton in 1913, and had children Jack Summerton, Albert Summerton, Edward Summerton, and Claude Summerton. Agnes Summerton died at age 50 years old on April 4, 1937 in Yallourn.

In 1886, in the year that Agnes Kenihan Summerton was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.

In 1908, when she was 22 years old, a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.
