He married Annie Blair Kenihan in 1885, and had children Agnes Kenihan Summerton, Katherine Kenihan Maxwell, Janet Kenihan, William Wallace Kenihan, Rubena Kenihan, John Claude Kenihan, Helen Margaret Kenihan, Elizabeth Kenihan, Alexander Kenihan, Gladys Anne Kenihan, Elsie Kenihan, and Lorna Kenihan. William Kenihan died at age 70 years old on December 16, 1932 in Briagolong, Wellington Shire County.

In 1861, in the year that William Kenihan was born, on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.

In 1886, he was 25 years old when on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
