Albert Edward Hatfield of Smythesdale Australia was born in 1865 in Scarsdale, Golden Plains Shire County, VIC to George Henry Hatfield and Emma (Heather) Hatfield. He had siblings Sarah Lucy Caroline Hatfield, Beatrice Victoria Hatfield, Robert William Hatfield, George Henry Hatfield, Emma Eliza (Hatfield) Crosthwaite, Alfred Drake Hatfield, Margaret Heather (Hatfield) Armstrong, Arthur Ernest Hatfield, Louisa (Hatfield) Armstrong, and Mary Ann (Hatfield) Maybon. He married Edith Anna (Palmer) Hatfield in 1900, and had children Myrtle Mary Hatfield, Herbert Palmer Hatfield, and Maud Edith Hannah Hatfield. Albert Hatfield died at age 76 years old on September 28, 1942 in Smythesdale.

In 1865, in the year that Albert Edward Hatfield was born, on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.

In 1876, Albert was just 11 years old when on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
