Aleric Oshier's History: 1903 - 1987

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Aleric was my grandfather. He married Hazel Ayotte Dec 28, 1925. I remember we had their 50the anniversary celebration at their house in N. Tonawanda, NY. All the family, cousins, aunts, Uncles, were there. The house seemed at the seams with all the people. I was 11 or so at the time. When Memere Ayotte was still alive, she passed in 1974, Aleric and Hazel would some years take me with them to Tupper Lake to visit the family there. They made this trip at least once a year. We would stop at the springs, I later found out were called Lumberjack Spring, discovered by his father, Louis Elias Oshier. And we would see bears. Loved those days! There is a lot about Aleric and Hazel. The had 5 children, Eleanor, Maurie, James (my father), Virginia, and Louis.

  • Ethnicity & Family History

Both grandparents are French, French Canadian, coming from Canada into America in the 1800's, and even into the early 1900's. Mostly, they settled into logging, were lumberjacks, and pretty much built up The Tupper Lake area in Franklin County with a handful of other families, like the Ayottes.
  • Early Life & Education

I know he went to 4th grade, after that, I'm not sure. But he read the newspaper every day, all day long. Comics, sports, news, he read it cover to cover, every page. I recall a picture of hi in a security uniform. I believe he also worked at a steel place.
  • Professional Career

He worked a steel mill, and later worked security. He was retired most of my memory of him.
  • Personal Life & Family

Church. He and Hazel were very devout Catholics and attended church every Sunday, without fail. They often took us with them, and as bored children are likely to do, we kind of squirmed. The Church was very important to them. When each passed away, the church did a mass for them.

No, since I pretty much grew up with him. I would love however to find more records to add to his part of my family research. Birth records, etc.
