Westward Ho, California, here we come!
When planning a move from Tonawanda, NY, Alex and his brother Alfred each built a trailer to transfer the furniture and belongings of their combined family's home in preparation for their big move West. Alex and his five-year-old son John, Alex's brother Alfred and his wife Mercie and their five children; Mercie's sister Betty Margaret and her husband Andy (who decided to rent a moving trailer in lieu of building one themselves), were going to caravan to California!
Residing in Tonawanda, New York in a big two-story house, Alex and Alfred were the best of kin, and the best of friends. Their love for fishing was always rewarded with a simple jaunt right across the street to their rowboat, and they were often rowing across the Niagra River to their favorite fishing spot with their sons, and Andy. Those days were wonderful, it was a joyful time for them and our family. We sure ate a lot of fish back in those days.
Now the men were in earnest, and there was not much time for our family picnics, or fishing. Mercie had her hands full with six kids, as Johnny was one of us, though our cousin, he was just like a brother to us. But as the men planned, we children had to say good-bye to a lot of our toys, and a lot of the furniture was donated or sold, those trailers couldn't take our houseful of stuff, they could just take the necessities.
Our Uncle Alex was just like a second dad to us five children, and Johnny had a second dad in our dad. He always thought of our mom as his own mom, since he had lost his own mother when he was a tiny newborn baby.
Finally, we were on the road, we traveled down U.S. Route 66 once it started in Chicago, and it would take us all the way to the golden sunshine and shores of California.
Uncle Alex always wore his hat and usually a suit coat, he was always stylish, happy-go-lucky, and treated us kids to any treats he bought for his own son. The saddest thing for us in that move was that once we got to California, the plan was for Alex and John to find their own home, and that was a devastation for us kids, so that trip was bittersweet.
Even though we lived in different homes after the move, and later, different cities in CA....and later still, different states. our Uncle Alex left us with happy memories of childhood days that shine on through the years.
Alex John Legros Jr may have passed from this earthly spere, but his memories live on in our hearts.
