Alexander McLaren was born in 1835 to Duncan McLaren, and had a sister Catherine (McLaren) Cox. He married Mary (Munro) McLaren, and died at age 75 years old in 1910. Alexander McLaren was buried at Poowong Cemetery in Poowong, South Gippsland Shire County, VIC Australia.

In 1835, in the year that Alexander McLaren was born, on June 2nd, P. T. Barnum and his "circus" began their first tour of the U.S. He had paid $1,000 for an elderly slave named Joice Heth, who he claimed was 161 years old and a former nurse for George Washington. Touring the northeast of the U.S., he made more than $1,000 per week. Joice died the next year - at about 80 years old.
Did you know?
In 1846, when he was only 11 years old, on February 26th, the Liberty Bell was rung for George Washington's birthday. It is said that when it was rung, a previous crack was worsened, leading to the crack seen today. A paper of the time said that at "around noon, it was discovered that the ringing had caused the crack to be greatly extended, and that the old Independence Bell...now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and forever dumb".
