  • Introduction

    The Age, Melbourne, July 14, 1954. Gippsland Pioneer Dead. BAIRNSDALE. Tuesday- Mr. Alfred Charles Broome 91-year-old pioneer, of Gippsland East, whose funeral took place today, came with his parents from Ballarat to Nicholson, near Bairnsdale, 87 years ago. Travelling through Melbourne he camped, with his parents, in a bullock waggon in Elizabeth street. With the exception of 15 years spent at Cann River, Mr. Broome lived on the Nicholson River. He did a great deal towards the succesful development of a now well-developed rural area. He was a steward in the Methodist Church, a member of the Tambo Shire Council for 20 years, and took a keen interest in all community welfare. His wife predeceased him. He is survived by three daughters.

In 1862, in the year that Alfred Charles Broome was born, British citizen Anna Leonowens, a widow, accepted a job in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the children and wives of the King of Siam - he had 39 wives and concubines and 82 children. Taking her son with her and sending her daughter to England for schooling, she taught in Siam for 6 years - until the King died.
