Alfred Ernest Hanby of Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born in 1872 in Belf to John Hanby and Catherine Mccann Hanby. He had siblings Elizabeth Ann Hanby, Edith Hanby, Mary Hales, Edith Amelia Hanby, Edward Albert Hanby, Frederick William Hanby, Beatrice Maude Hanby, Jane Hanby, Herbert Palmer Hanby, Jonathan Hales, and Horace Leopold Hanby. He married Mary Elizabeth Elden Hanby, and had children Bruce Elden Hanby, Heather Alexandra Hanby, John Noel Hanby, and Nancy Jean Hanby. Alfred Hanby died at age 85 years old on August 1, 1958 in Steiglitz, Golden Plains Shire County.

In 1872, in the year that Alfred Ernest Hanby was born, on May 22nd, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Amnesty Act of 1872. The Act restored full civil rights to secessionists, including about 150,000 former slaves who had fought in the Confederate Army. About 500 former Confederate sympathizers were not allowed their full civil rights.

In 1884, Alfred was merely 12 years old when on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
