In 1859, in the year that Alfred Lilley Pierce was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.

In 1864, when he was only 5 years old, on June 15th, Arlington National Cemetery was created in Arlington Virginia. 200 acres from the grounds of Robert E. Lee's home were set aside to be a military cemetery. The home and grounds had been in Lee's wife's family - she was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.
