Wendel, 80, of 1640 Murray St., Forty Fort, died Monday afternoon at his home following a lengthy illness. Born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Alfred and Anna Neidenmeyer Wendel, he lived in Forty Fort the past 53 years and was a member of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church. Prior to his retirement in 1969, he was employed for 40 years as a switchman for the Bell Telephone Co. In connection with his employment, Mr. Wendel was instrumental in the organization of the Bellco Credit Union within the Bell organization. He was active for 30 years in the Federation of Telephone Workers of America and formerly served as president of the local chapter and as secretary and treasurer of the state organization of the Federation. He also was a member of the Kinnard Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are his wife, the former Laura Kahler; daughter, Mrs. Jean Herbert, Forty Fort; son, Alfred L. Jr., West Yarmouth, Mass.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Hugh B. Hughes and Son Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with Rev. James A. Baker, pastor of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Forty Fort Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 7 to 9, Thursday from 10 until time of services. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church, Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, or to the Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Wheel Chair Club, 226 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 18702.
