Alfred William Kensing 1885 - 1955

Alfred William Kensing of Mason, Mason County, Texas United States was born on July 5, 1885 in Mason to Mathilde (Lemburg) Kensing and Friedrich Christop Heinrich Kensing. He had siblings Auguste Bertha (Kensing) Donop, Emma Wilhelmina (Kensing) Metzger, Marichen (Kensing) Worley, Thekla Clara (Kensing) King, and Benjamin August Kensing. Alfred was baptized at Hilda Bethel Methodist Church. Alfred's partner was Ida Kensing, and they had children Ernest Edward Kensing, Seth Kensing, Lee Roy Kensing, El Roy Kensing, Emmy (Kensing) Besset, Richard Alfred Kensing, Esther (Kensing) Jordan, and Wilbur Perry Kensing. He would also marry Ida Marie (Gross) Kensing on December 24, 1913 in Mason County, and they were married until Alfred's death on October 16, 1955 in Mason. They had children Ernest Eddie Kensing and Esther Lucille (Kensing) Jordan.

  • Introduction

    Born Wilhelm Alfred Kensing to Mathilde Lemburg and Friedrich Heinrich Kensing. He was christened at the Hilda/Bethel Methodist Church in Mason County, Texas. Date unknown. His grandparents were Hanne Justine Wilhelmine Sophia Louisa “Johanne” Borchers and Johann Friedrich Heinrich “Henry” Kensing. Johanne and Heinrich were the last Texas immigrants massacred by the Indians. They are buried on private property off Doss-Cherry Spring Road, Gillespie County, Texas, USA. Texas State Historical Marker 5171010059 reads “Heinrich Kensing (November 11, 1822 - July 26, 1865) Johanna Borchers Kensing (August 4, 1823 - July 29, 1865) German immigrants, arriving in Texas in 1845, and migrating to Gillespie County by 1850. In 1862 the Kensings moved into Mason County (about 7 miles NW). On July 26, 1865, the couple were attacked by Indians near Platt Kopf (1.5 miles N). Kensing died instantly; his wife died on the 29, at the Conrad Welge House (.33 miles NE), leaving 7 children. Recorded - 1972. Alfred’s father was the only surviving son. Heinrich and Johanne were both born in Hamelspringe, Hameln-Pyrmont, Niedersachsen (formerly Hanover), Germany. They arrived at Galveston on the brig Gerhard Herman on January 20, 1846. Alfred attended school in Mason, Mason County, Texas, where his father was the school teacher. He married Ida "Lizzy" Kruze on June 18, 1911 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason, Mason County, Texas. Lizzy died a few months later in childbirth on September, 1911. She is buried in the Crosby Cemetery in Mason, Mason County, Texas, USA. On December 24, 1913, Alfred married Ida Marie Gross, the daughter of Ludwig Phillip Gross and Christine Maria Ischar, at the bride's home in Grossville, Mason County, Texas, USA. Their children were: Ernest Edward Kensing 1914–1977 • Seth Herbert Kensing 1916–1972 • Esther Lucille Kensing Jordan Hartmann 1918–2000 • El Roy Kensing 1919–1919 • Lee Roy William Kensing 1919–2001 • Emma Marie Kensing Bessett 1922–1999 • Baby Kensing 1925–1925 • Wilburn Perry Kensing 1931–1995 • Richard Alfred Kensing 1934–2022 On October 15, 1955, he went fishing on the James River. Tragically, he suffered a stroke and died the next day of a cerebral hemorrage in Mason Memorial Hospital. Alfred W. Kensing is buried in the Gooch Cemetery in Mason, Mason County, Texas, USA. I am Ona Kensing Shoemake, the granddaughter of Alfred, and the daughter of Lee Roy.
