Alice Mae (Honeycutt) Appleton was born on October 8, 1941 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona United States to Glenn Honeycutt and Elwanda Ioan (Sturgill) Honeycutt, and had siblings Wendill Farris Honeycitt, La Fonda Sue (Honeycutt ) Darnell, Bonnie Gail (Honeycutt) Cross, Terry Glenn Honeycutt, Danny Keith Honeycutt, Sandra Kay (Honeycutt) Pendergrass, Michael Lynn Honeycutt, and Glenda Faye (Honeycutt) Albus. She married Hank Appleton and they later divorced on February 25, 2014. They had a child Monica Lynn Appleton-Brown. She also married Melvin Brown, and they were married until Alice's death on February 25, 2014. They had children Billie Glenn Brown, Donnie Brown, and Wanda Brown.

In 1941, in the year that Alice Mae (Honeycutt ) Appleton was born, on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.
