Amanda Ruth (Ricketts) Barker was born on August 27, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States to Ruth Magdalene (Richardson) Ricketts and Edward Bennett Ricketts, and had siblings Oscar Daniel Ricketts, Estes Beverly Ricketts, Paul Zebedee Ricketts, Harold Edward Ricketts, Sarah Alma Ricketts, and Reuben George Ricketts. She married Glenn Monroe Barker on July 13, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, and they were married until Amanda's death on November 1, 1982 in Galax. Amanda Barker had children Edward Glenn Barker and Dorothy Jean (Barker) Kaesemeyer.

In 1910, in the year that Amanda Ruth (Ricketts) Barker was born, the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated. U.S. publisher W.D. Boyce was visiting England when he became lost in the London fog. An unknown Boy Scout helped him find his way out, declining a tip (he said that he was a Boy Scout and was doing his good deed for the day). Boyce was so impressed that he incorporated the Boy Scouts of America when he returned home. Its purpose was "to teach boys patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values."

He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
