He was born on June 5, 1918 in Indianola, Mississippi and had siblings Willie Herbert (1910-1976), Rosie Anna (1912-1991), James J, Leola, Mary, Viola, Ruthie Bell, Alice Mae (1926-2000), Joel Vance (1931-1989), and others. He married Dorothy M Ross (1941-2017) and they had children Ambrose Ross (Jr or the III since both his father and grandfather had the name Ambrose), Elizabeth (1959-1985), James (1960-1990), and Dorothy Ann Ross (1962-1980). Ambrose enlisted into the military on November 27, 1943 and served in the US Army until July 22, 1944.
