    At age seven, Ann Clay Anderson was living with her parents, Marshall Anderson and Jennie C. Anderson, in Los Angeles, California, on W. 36th Street. Both of her parents had been born in Kentucky. Ann's father was working at a retail grocery store. Ann Anderson married Joseph P. Johnson on December 17, 1943, in California. They were married for over 45 years, until he died in 1987. They had children Joseph, Victor, Vivian, and Anne-Marie Johnson. Ann and Joseph were living with sons Tony and Victor in Los Angeles, California when Ann was 27. Ann was teaching 2nd grade at a city school and Joseph was a policeman with the police department - he eventually retired as a Sergeant with the LAPD.

In 1922, in the year that Ann Clay Johnson was born, on December 6th, the Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion of the British Empire, was officially proclaimed. While establishing some independence for the people of Ireland, it did not create a fully independent Ireland and the fighting continued.

In 1943, she was 21 years old when on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
