GRID COACH, INSTRUCTOR ANTHONY GUERRIERI HAD DEEP INTEREST IN HIS STUDENTS The death of Anthony M. Guerrieri, assistan football coach and instructor at Hudson Catholic High, was "a tremendous loss,' according to Brother Thomas Caldwell, principal. Mr. Guerrieri, 33, of 353 South Center Street, Orange, collapsed in the school's gymnasium shortly before his last class was schdeduled to begin yesterday. He was rushed to the Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Brother Caldwell described Mr. Guerrieri, an Atlantic Conference football record holer, "as a man with a deep and sincere interest in all of his students." Mr. Guerrieri had taught at the school for 2 1/2 years. Before that, he and Donald Panciello, head football coach at Hudson Catholic, coached at Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair. The Montclair team won two state championships and finished unbeaten in 1963. The school dropped football after that season and Guerrieri moved to Jersey City. "He was the best kind of person you would want to meet," said Panciello. "He was outgoing, warm and a very religious man - the kids idolized him," he added. Panciello said that Mr. Guerrieri set a football record when he punted "for a 44.7 yard average in the 1957 season." "Tony played fullback on the Caroling State 1957 Atlantic Conference champs that included pro star Dick Christie in the backfield." said Panciello. Tony was only 5 foot 7 and weighed 165 pounds, but he was solid. He was a stickler for good conditioning and kept himself in the best of shape," he explained. "He was one of the best-liked teachers in the school," said Matthew Siane, sophomore, of 264 Palisade Avenue, Jersey City. Another student said "He always joked around with us. When we played a game in class, he would join in with us." Mr. Guerrieri leaves his wife, Emilie, and two young children. A requiem mass was offered today in the school's auditorium. Funeral arrangements are still incomplete. - The Jersey Journal (Jersey City, New Jersey) Thursday, April 20, 1967 on page 23.
