    Anthony DeGennaro, 84, math, computer teacher Published: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 He was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Gallitzin, Pa., and lived in Oberlin since 1959. DeGennaro, a math teacher, began his career in 1952 in Kipton at the former Camden High School and continued when it became Firelands High School. He taught math and computers at Avon Lake High School from 1962 until retiring in 1982 and also taught math part-time at Lorain County Community College for many years. He graduated from Gallitzin High School in 1939, served with the Works Progress Administration and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in the 8th Air Force in England and flew 31 missions over occupied Europe as lead navigator on a B-24 bomber, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster. After his military service DeGennaro graduated from St. Francis College in Loretta, Pa., and received a master's degree from Penn State University. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Oberlin, Knights of Columbus Father Ragan Council, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and educational organizations. He was a former trustee and secretary of Oberlin Cable Co-op and enjoyed golf, bridge, fishing, Steelers football, Cubs baseball, horse racing and crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret A. (nee Roman); three sons, all of whom are teachers: Alan DeGennaro of Hanover, Pa., Ramon P. DeGennaro of Knoxville, Tenn., and Anthony R. DeGennaro of Columbus; a brother, Peter Gennaro of Wildomer, Calif.; and three grandsons and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pietro and Angeladea (nee Epenicle) DeGennaro; brother, Sylvio Gennaro; and sister, Agnes Sabatine. Friends may call Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Cowling Funeral Home, 228 S. Main St., Oberlin. Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 410 W. Lorain St., with the Rev. William B. Padavick officiating. Burial with military honors by VFW Post 1079 will follow in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 410 W. Lorain St., Oberlin, OH 44074; or New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035-1450
