ARLENE LILLIAN MAYERS: JERICHO - On Feb. 28, 1990, Arlene Lillian Mayers quietly left us to be reunited with her beloved husband George, in eternal peace. She was born in Jericho, Oct. 18, 1919, daughter of Harold and Amy (Bentley) Hunt, and grandniece of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley. Arlene lived most of her life in Jericho. She moved to Tuscon (sic), Ariz., in 1988, but always felt that Jericho was home, and returned in 1989. Her strength and courage inspired those around her, her sense of humor brought us joy and her serenity gave us peace. Arlene leaves three sons, Ronald Palmer of Boise, Idaho, Randall Palmer of Williston, and Dennis Mayers of Jericho; one daughter, Susan (Mayers) Richardson of Tuscon (sic), Ariz.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Palmer) Fazzini and Richard Palmer of New Kensington, Pa., Karen Palmer of Palm Beach, Fla., and Pvt. Jeffrey Palmer, U.S. Army, Germany; two great-grandsons, Anthony and Michael Fazzini of Pennsylvania; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held in the spring, Arlene's favorite time of year. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to either the Visiting Nurse Association, 284 East Ave., Burlington 05401, or to the Jericho Historical Society, Box 35, Jericho 05465. - The Burlington Free Press March 2nd 1990 in Burlington, Vermont

In 1919, in the year that Arlene Lillian (Hunt) Mayers was born, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
Did you know?
In 1920, Arlene was only 1 year old when in September, a bomb exploded in the J.P. Morgan bank building in New York City, killing 30 people immediately - 8 later died due to their injuries - and injuring another 200. Killing more people than the 1910 bombing of the LA Times (the deadliest terrorist act up until then), no one took responsibility and the perpetrators were never found. Italian anarchists were suspected of the bombing.
