Arthur Charles Twyford was born in 1893 to Arthur Twyford and Mary Eliza (Doutch) Twyford, and had siblings Lillian May Twyford, Mabel Howard (Twyford) Lawrey, Eva Twyford, Kitty Twyford, Frederick Edward Twyford, Dorothy Twyford, Ronald N. Twyford, and Audrey Twyford. He married Edith Overland Twyford ( Ward, and died at age 73 years old on September 27, 1967. Arthur Twyford was buried in Taradale Cemetery, Napier, Napier City County, Hawke's Bay New Zealand.

In 1893, in the year that Arthur Charles Twyford was born, on May 5th, a crash on the New York Stock Exchange started a depression that lasted 4 years. It was the beginning of the Panic of 1893.

In 1911, by the time he was 18 years old, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire occurred, one of the deadliest industrial disasters in U.S. history. 146 workers (123 women and 23 men, many of them recent Jewish and Italian immigrants) died from the fire or by jumping to escape the fire and smoke. The garment factory was on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of a building in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Doors to stairwells and exits had been locked in order to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to prevent theft, so they couldn't escape by normal means when the fire broke out. Due to the disaster, legislation was passed to protect sweatshop workers.
