    She was born in Jersey City, NJ, and was the daughter of Michael Hlib and Charlotte (Malinowski) Hlib. Barbara was raised in Fairlawn, NJ. She received a BA in English from Douglass College and an MA from Michigan State University. She is survived by sons Thom Belote and his spouse Anne of Chapel Hill, NC, and Alex Belote and his spouse Paula of Taunton, MA, and by her daughter, Mayra Belote of Shrewsbury, MA, as well as two granddaughters, Sofia and Lydia. She is also survived by her brother Charles Hlib, and his spouse Ilene of Bloxom, VA, and niece Michelle Slusser.

    Barbara was a member of First Parish in Wayland, Unitarian Universalist, for 25 years before joining the UU Area Church in Sherborn. A service celebrating Barbara’s life will be held at First Parish in Wayland, 225 Boston Post Road, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 10:30AM.
  • Professional Career

    She was an English teacher at Natick High School for two decades. She subsequently worked as an educator at MCI Concord, helping incarcerated men earn their GED. Barbara was a copy editor with Community Newspapers. Barbara loved nature and animals. She led many family vacations to national parks across the United States. She and Tom enjoyed trips to Alaska and the Galapagos Islands in retirement. Barbara was a proud progressive: She served as a union representative with the Massachusetts Teachers Association, attended anti-war and pro-democracy protests and rallies, and participated in Democratic Party activities. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Thomas A. Belote, in 2020.

Belote, 82, died peacefully from natural causes in her home in Wayland, MA, on September 2, 2024. She was born in Jersey City, NJ, and was the daughter of Michael Hlib and Charlotte (Malinowski) Hlib. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Thomas A. Belote, in 2020. She is survived by sons Thom Belote and his spouse Anne of Chapel Hill, NC, and Alex Belote and his spouse Paula of Taunton, MA, and by her daughter, Mayra Belote of Shrewsbury, MA, as well as two granddaughters, Sofia and Lydia. Besides her husband and children, her family also included a series of beloved cats, Puss Cat, Kit Kat, Mingo, and Smuuchy, and a dog, Ruff. Barbara was a member of First Parish in Wayland, Unitarian Universalist, for 25 years before joining the UU Area Church in Sherborn. A service celebrating Barbara’s life will be held at First Parish in Wayland, 225 Boston Post Road, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 10:30AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or to a progressive political candidate’s campaign.
