Zakheim grew up in Kansas City and enlisted in the United States Army on April 24, 1941, at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. After completing his military service, Zakheim settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked as a bookkeeper. He was married to Louise V Zakheim, and they had two children, Rosalyn B and Irving L Zakheim.
