Benjamin Franklin McDowell 1827 - 1865

Benjamin Franklin Mcdowell was born on April 17, 1827 at Edgefield, SC to Elizabeth 'Betsy' Ouzts and William McDowell, and had siblings George [P.] B. McDowell, J. Daniel McDowell, William Wister McDowell, Georgiana Elizabeth McDowell, Parthenia Savannah McDowell, Lucinthia Jane McDowell, John L. McDowell, Keziah A. McDowell, Shemuel McDowell, James Tolbert McDowell, Francis Ellen McDowell, and Elizabeth Caroline 'Eliza' McDowell. He married Mary 'Polly' Dorn, and they had a child William Manley McDowell. He married Elizabeth Outz, and they had children John Lafayette McDowell and Elizabeth Savannah McDowell. Benjamin Mcdowell died at age 37 years old on February 16, 1865 at Rock Island, IL, and was buried at Rock Island Confederate Cemetery in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois United States.

    Not only did Benjamin Franklin McDowell die in the War of Northern Aggression but his twin brother Daniel McDowell also died in this war. Daniel is buried in the Covington, GA Confederate Cemetery and Benjamin died in the infamous Rock Island, Ill prison and is buried there in grave #567. Tragic....

In 1827, in the year that Benjamin Franklin McDowell was born, Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.
