Ruth M. McDowell STRODE
I have an old studio photograph identified as Ruth M. STRODE which was taken at the Erler Studio in Peoria, IL in the 1890’s or early 1900’s most likely. Ruth appears to be in her teens or 20’s at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Ruth and her family:
Ruth M. MCDOWELL was b. 27 Sept 1879 in Lewistown, IL to parents Edward B. MCDOWELL (1851-1921) and Carrie B. HARRIS (1857-1939). Ruth had two siblings, Rueben Ross MCDOWELL (1887-1955) and Tracy Lorensberry or Lounsberry MCDOWELL (1889-1963). Ruth married Walter Lucien STRODE in Lewistown, IL on 17 Jun 1903.
The couple moved to Tulsa, OK in 1905 and later to Claremore, OK and then to Stillwater, OK in 1914 where they purchased the McTaggart and Hull Furniture and Undertaking Co. Her husband died in 1917 and she operated the business until she sold it in 1931.
Ruth died 3 Mar 1946 in Stillwater, OK and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, IL. Her obituary lists her surviving family members including a son, Edward McDowell STRODE of Philadelphia, PA; a brother Ross MCDOWELL of Oklahoma City, OK; a niece Mrs. Ruth MCDOWELL COZART of Houston, TX; and granddaughters Merry Carolyn STRODE and Stephanie Starr STRODE both of Philadelphia, PA.

I have an old studio photograph identified as Mrs. William BURKLEY of N. Rose, NY which was taken in the 1890's at the F. A. Stacy Studio in Alton, NY. The woman in the photograph appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time the photograph was taken. I believe that this is a photograph of Mary A. MCDOWELL who was married to William John BURKLEY.
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Mary and her family:

Irish related organization. All of the men are wearing white shirts, some
with bow ties, others regular tie. Two of the older men (possible 50 or 60
years of age) are wearing dark jackets. There is also a young boy in the
picture.

Irvin McDowell - Major General US Army
Major General Irvin McDowell spent his career as an officer in the United States Army. He began as an aid to various high ranking Generals and taught tactics at the prestigious West Point Academy until the beginning of the Civil War when he was promoted to Brigadier General and took command of the Army of Northeastern Virginia. Unfortunately, his lack of experience commanding troops (and the troops inexperience) led to a decisive defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run which was the first major land battle of the civil war.
After various military failures and a court marshal, Major General Irvin McDowell was given command of the Department of the Pacific (perhaps to get him away from the battlefield?) and landed as Commander of the Department of California. After 44 years of service, Irvin Mcdowell eventually retired from the army in 1882 and served as Park Commissioner of San Francisco until his death.

Was supposed to teach business arts in Tillamook, OR school district but don't think that happened. She moved to Chicago and worked for a law firm there until her death around 1981.

Robert McDowell of Brooklyn, NY?
I have the original of this photo and was told that it was my grandmother's favorite uncle, Robert McDowell. This Robt was born in Brooklyn in 1852 and moved to CO @1886. The crosspiece has the number "84" which is the National Guard unit for Brooklyn. Since this Robert McDowell wasn't old enough to serve in the Civil War, it may be a different McDowell.
Who is the soldier in this picture? It was supposedly taken after the Civil War. I was told this was a grandmother's favorite Uncle. But that McDowell was born in 1852 and was too young to serve in the Civil War. The crosspiece indicates his unit as the 84th. This was the National Guard unit for Brooklyn, NY. This uncle's father was also named Robert McDowell and he came to the US from Ireland @1850.
