Erastus W. Westcott
Erastus W. Westcott
I have an old studio photograph of Rev. E. WESTCOTT which was taken at the Will Thomas Studio in Owatonna, MN. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with the subject appearing to be in his 40's or 50's. I believe that this is a photograph of Rev. Erastus W. WESTCOTT and have gathered the following information regarding Erastus and his family:

Rev. Erastus W. WESTCOTT was b. 22 Apr 1816 in Milford, NY to parents Reuben WESTCOTT (1774-1848) and Susanna or Susannah LEAVENS or LEVINGS (1775-1864) who were married 5 Jan 1795 in Cheshire, MA. Erastus was one of 12 children born to this couple including Andrew; Mary “Polly”; Reuben Jr.; Susan or Susanna; Hosea; Otis; Orissa or Orrissa; Harvey; Erastus W.; Julia; Elizabeth, Elisa, or Eliza; and Lurana WESTCOTT, all born between 1796 and 1821. Erastus married Lucy Ann ROCKWELL (1817-1899) on 13 Apr 1837 in Hartwick or Rockwells Mills, NY and they had four children including Erastus Wirt; Chester Rockwell; Susan Freelove; and Charles Afton or Aften WESTCOTT, all born between 1838 and 1853.

Erastus accepted his first assignment as the minister of a Baptist Church in New Berlin, NY; in 1840 he moved to a church in New Meredith, NY and there organized the first Baptist Church in Delhi, NY. He then led churches in Otego, NY and Oneonta, NY and in 1857 Erastus became the minister of the Baptist Church in East Rochester, MN. Erastus was an abolitionist and leader of temperance reform during his career in the ministry.

His son Erastus Wirt WESTCOTT married Helen Augusta GARVER, and they lived in Concord, MN with Rev. WESTCOTT. Erastus died 7 Sept 1901 in Concord, MN at the home of his daughter Susan WESTCOTT WHITING and is buried in the Concord Cemetery in that city.

I’d like to get the photograph to a family member and would appreciate you contacting me if you are a member of this family or know someone who might be.

Thanks,
Shelley
