In 1804, in the year that Benjamin Franklin Taylor was born, on July 11th, Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, fought a duel. Alexander Hamilton was shot and died the next day. Burr was indicted for murder and was acquitted but his political career was ruined.

In 1827, Benjamin was 23 years old when Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.
