  • Introduction

    The Australasian, Melbourne. 9th April 1870. Mr. Candler held an inquest on Wednesday, at Richmond, on the body of Benjamin Hy. Rogers, aged 36 years. On the 24th ult., deceased who was in the habit of making Brunswick black, was at work in a back yard, when he put a quantity of turpentine into a pot of the black, and while he was thus engaged, the mixture exploded and flamed up. Deceased ran about the yard with his clothes in flames till an apprentice named R. H. Ballingall extinguished the fire. The deceased and the apprentice were also at the time engaged in making knife-powder, The Mount Alexander Mail. Victoria. 7th April, 1870. -MELBOURNE. We regret to announce the death by accident of Mr. B. H. Rogers, of Richmond. It appears that in the preparation of lamp-black, while mixing the other ingredients with turpentine, some of the mixture splashed into the fire, which caused an explosion immediately, and enveloped Mr Rogers in flame. He was most severely burned about the lower parts of the body and arms, and died at 11 o'clock yesterday, after thirteen days of the most severe sufferings. He was well known amongst the various Sabbath schools, and he has been a most earnest promoter of various young men's improvement societies.
