  • Ethnicity & Family History

Beni's paternal family came from a small village in Southerstern Poland called Laskowka. After leaving the family dairy farm, he arrived in America in 1913 at the age of 26 before the German occupation of Kaisadorys during WW1. Beni stayed with his sister, Mrs. Aniella Yaksta (Nellie Jaksas) Verbitsky in Freeland, Pa. Two years later he moved to Sugar Notch to work in the No. 9 Colliery.
  • Nationality & Locations

Little is known about Beni's early life in Lithuania. He was probably born into a large family and raised on a traditional small Kaisiadorys homestead. His father mostly likely was a blacksmith as that was the most prominent labor job at that time in the area. There was a famous blacksmith school and he may have attended it to acquire a trade. As a young adult he chose to immigrate to the United States following the pattern of many young men who had few prospects in their native homeland. Families tended to leave the homestead to the eldest son and sought to marry their daughters to similar land-rich neighbors. Families scraped together their resources to fund the next oldest son's one-way ticket to America. That son would begin a new life and, in turn, help finance his next brother's journey westward. Each successive brother would do the same, followed by their sisters whom they hoped would marry a fellow immigrant countryman. Such marriages were arranged quickly, as there were three males for every female in the Lithuanian immigrant population.

Benjaminas and Marita exchanged marriage vows on January 20, 1918 at Holy Family Church in Sugar Notch, Pa. by Rev. Francis Kasaczun in the presence of Leo Kaimlinas and Aniela Sabalauckas. Rev. A. Halicki was pastor. The Funeral was held at the Peyer Matikiewicz Funeral Home, 24 Mosier Street, Hanover Section, Nanticoke, Thursday morning at 8:30, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9: 30 at Sts. Peter and Paul Lithuanian Church, Sugar Notch. Interment was at the parish cemetery, Freed St., Sugar Notch. www.findagrave.com/memorial/227515209/benjamin-leikauskas
  • Professional Career

He worked in the No. 9 Colliery in Sugar Notch, Pa. After marriage, when the mine shut down for repair, the couple relocated to Winona, West Virginia for work in the coal mines, returning to Pennsylvania when the Colliery reopened. It later became the Glen Alden Mine.
  • Personal Life & Family

Beni was a founder and supporter of St. Peter and Paul Church Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church in Sugar Notch, Pa. He was tall, had dark brown hair, handsome and wore fine suits and silk shirts. He smoked cigarettes, played popular tunes on the accordian, and loved to eat pork chops. Beni was an expert marksman shooting pheasant and ducks with his double barrel shotgun and deer with his 30-06 hunting rifle. He was an aficionado for fine Cadillac coups and always had a shiny new half dollar in his pocket for a visiting grandchild. He bought the cars at Freeland Highway Motors, a company owned and operated by his nephews Martin, Frank, Michael, and William Verbitsky.
