Growing up in Lithuania during the late 1800's was unimaginable difficult and there were no opportunities for young people. She was 16 years old when she sailed across the Atlantic on a transport cargo ship.. The crossing took two horrible weeks as there were several hurricanes. Mary recalled being continuously sick and that the diet was mostly boiled potatoes and prunes. While watching the Statue of Liberty come into view, she was informed that this was the ship's last voyage and that it was going to the junkyard. If she had known this prior she said that she would have been more scared and upset. In Scranton she learned to speak English and worked hard at Scranton Lace until she met her husband, Benny.

Mary's hospitality always made everyone feel welcome. She opened her heart and home to family and friends throughout her life. Mary was everyone's rock and both relatives and friends turned to her often as they faced all challenges in their lives. She was an avid cook and baker, made crafted woven rag rugs, and enjoyed Bingo. Mary will always be remembered for her garden which had countless varieties of vegetables and flowers including Lithuanian Rue. She was fluent in the Lithuanian and Polish languages and loved to tell the famous fairy tales beloved from the old countries to her beautiful grandchildren. Mary would get a ride to Scranton from Lillian Repshas (Anthony Timinskas's sister) to visit her daughter Mary Timins. After a half hour of catching up with the news, she would get up from the kitchen table, put on her coat, and walk outside to visit her friends from the "old country". Leonora Sabounas lived up the street on Everett Ave. and Mary Tateronis was two doors down the Jackson St. Leonora was Mary Timins's godmother for Baptism.
