  • Introduction

    Bernice Spittle was born in Castlemaine 1886. She lived in Penoyre Cottage (recently demolished but can be googled for viewing) until she married Mr Johnson. They had a son Robert. They divorced and she married Thomas Spittle, they shifted to Adamstown and had a son Frederick. Unfortunately both sons died in their 20s. Thomas died in Newtown in 1942. Last known address for Bernice was in the same area in 1943. Bernice's family John and Catherine Williams came to Australia in 1857. John Thomas (?Grandparent)was a master shoemaker and he and his wife Mary built a home down the road from Penoyre Cottage, it is still there. Most of the original family are buried in the same plot in the Chewton Cemetery. The headstone that mentions some of them was carved by John Williams. It is a work of art.

In 1886, in the year that Bernice May Williams Spittle was born, on January 5th, Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson's book the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was published. Immediately popular, the paperback book was sold for $1 in the U.S. - almost $25 today. Stevenson's stepson said that he wrote the first draft in under 3 days.

In 1943, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
