1920's Beach Beauty Contest
1920's Beach Beauty Contest
Photo of a typical bathing suit beach competition taken on an unknown beach in 1920. The winners, Elizabeth Margaret Williams and Elizabeth Roache are holding their (rather impressive) trophies. I can't tell if Elizabeth was happy about winning or not.

This beach was the short-lived Tidal Basin Bathing Beach in Washington, DC (1918-1925). It was a strictly segregated facility in the nation's capital, which led to Congressional controversy and the beach's closure. The beauty contest during the "Bathing Carnival" was even shorter-lived (started in 1919). In 1920, Miss Williams (center) won as the "most beautiful bather" and Miss Roache (right), for "the most beautiful costume." The contest was banned after 1922 for being too risqué.
