In 1993, Kennedy was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, a position she held for three years. During her time in Japan, she worked to strengthen the economic and cultural ties between the United States and Japan, and she became a highly respected figure in Japanese society. After leaving her diplomatic post, Kennedy turned her attention to writing.
